Common questions
- Does everyone need their own subscription, or can the host share access?
- For streaming services like Netflix, Disney+, Max, Hulu, Prime Video, Crunchyroll, Paramount+, Apple TV+ and Peacock, every viewer needs their own active subscription. SyncUp synchronises the timestamp each person's own player is at; it does not restream the host's video, so there is nothing to share. That is also true of Teleparty and every other extension-based watch party tool. YouTube, Twitch and Kick are the exception: they are free to watch, so nobody needs an account at all.
- Which platforms work without installing anything?
- YouTube, Twitch, Kick and standard HTML5 video sites all work directly in the browser with no extension and no signup, on desktop and on mobile. The nine DRM-protected streaming services need the free SyncUp browser extension for Chrome, Firefox or Edge.
- Can I watch together on my phone?
- Yes for YouTube, Twitch, Kick and HTML5 video, which run in any mobile browser. Streaming services are desktop-only for now, because mobile browsers cannot run the extension that syncs them.
- How many people can watch together at once?
- Free rooms hold up to 5 people. If anyone in the room has SyncUp Plus, the cap rises to 50 for everyone in that room, so one Plus member can host a larger group without the rest subscribing.
- What is the best app to watch movies together online?
- It depends on where the film lives. If it is on YouTube or a normal video site, SyncUp needs no extension or signup and works on mobile. If it is on Netflix, Disney+ or Max, you need an extension-based tool and everyone needs their own subscription, which is where SyncUp's free extension or Teleparty both apply. If you want to watch a file from your own computer, SyncUp streams it peer-to-peer without uploading it anywhere.
